Benefit Concert—Achual Women’s Collective
Saturday, February 6th, 2010
The Amazon Wakani, is a grass roots organization, started in 1994 by philanthropist Bea Agins that protects and sustains the Achual people, their customs, traditions and rainforest lands in Peru. The encroachment of industry has shaken their culture and both educational and medical resources have greatly diminished, resulting in an increasing death rate and an erosion of indigenous culture. As a result, the women are attempting to start a Native Handcraft Collective to generate revenue to stop these recent incursions into their ability to obtain both health care, education, and preserve traditional culture. For this purpose, they have turned to the Amazon Wakani organization to generate the necessary funds for for the materials, equipment, tools, and supplies.
The Amazon Wakani has asked for the collaboration of Acoustic Vortex and we, in turn, have requested help from the musical community. And we have had the profound good fortune to enlist the assistance of five musicians who are both highly accomplished and very compassionate.
-
Lucia Comnes — a remarkable singer and violinist who interprets music from multiple diverse traditions.
-
Tracy Blackman — a wonderful singer and guitarist with her own combinations of folk, rock, and blues
-
Bittersweet — a ‘supergroup’ trio composed of accomplished singer-songwriters: Amy Meyers, Jeni Day, and Judea Eden.
Please join us for a remarkable concert for a most worthy cause.
